February is American Heart Health Month!
By Jamie Dickerson, WMHI Program Coordinator
According to the CDC, heart disease is the leading cause of death for men, women, and people of most racial and ethnic groups. Stress and high blood pressure are both known to increase the risk of heart disease and even heart attacks. Cardiovascular disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combine
Between 2019 and 2020, the cost of heart disease in the US was $252.2 billion!
What can you do?!
- Understand your risk factors
Get with a care provider to review all possible risk factors in your life, as well as establish a baseline for your heart’s health. - Work with health care providers on treatment plans
Build a lifestyle plan with your care provider that is assured to help you build your heart’s health! - Take small steps to better maintain a heart healthy lifestyle!
Incorporate more physical activity, diet changes, and build consistency with your primary care service provider.
Healthy Heart Lifestyle!
- Get Active
It is shown that moving for as little as 30 minutes a day reduces blood pressure, improves cholesterol levels, reduces stress hormones, and strengthens the heart muscle. - Subtract Added Sugar
Added sugars have been shown to raise blood pressure and increase chronic inflammation. It is said you should limit yourself to 6-9 tsps. of added sugars in a day. (There are 4g of sugar in each tsp of sugar; just divide the number of grams on the nutrition label by 4, and you’ll see how many teaspoons per serving you’re consuming.) - Cut Back on Salt
Too much salt is traced to an increased risk in heart disease and stroke from raised blood pressure. The recommended amount for adults is 2300 milligrams (about 1 teaspoon); 1500 is the recommended limit for those with heart issues.
